The Year In Words And Pages AKA My Favorite Books Of 2016
2016 has been a pisser of a year. Not a week has seemed to go by where the Grim Reaper has not scythed a celebrity or artist that was near and dear to our generation. I'm certain it isn't part of some diabolical plan or unholy sway in the cosmic fibers, but more likely the fact we are none of us aging backwards and these people, musicians, actors, artists that left so many smudgey fingerprints on our formulative years and growing up are now dropping off. A sad state of affairs but a fact of life.
While all that was going on, I managed to get a few things out there. My short story, "Summer Gullet" landed in Borderlands 6, edited by Tom Monteleone and his daughter, Olivia. That was a holy grail for me, as I grew up devouring those collections.
July saw my debut novella, Jedi Summer With The Magnetic Kid published by the kind folks at Post Moretm Press. To say this one was a personal thing would be an understatement. I was worried folks wouldn't like it and I was proven wrong. I'm happy about that.
In early October, Omnium Gatherum Press publsihed a novelette that I co-wrote with Mercedes Yardley. It's called Detritus In Love and it's a tragic and sad story of young love and despair and monsters. I also managed to land a novella for release in Spring of 2017 called Spungunion. I'm pretty stoked about that.
Anyway, while all of that was going on, I managed to read a lot of books. Almost all of them good, and a few great. Below are my faves. They are not in any particular order.
Mongrels by Stephen Graham Jones
The Ruin Season by Kristopher Triana
Stranded by Bracken MacLeod
The Train Derails In Boston by Jessica McHugh
The Night Parade by Ronald Malfi
The Fisherman by John Langan
Paper Tigers by Damien Angelica Walters
Scratch by Steve Himmer
Freaks Anon by Matthew Darst
Odd Man Out by James Newman
Of Foster Homes And Flies by Chad Lutzke
Fragile Dreams by Philip Fracassi
Complicity by Christopher Ropes
The Last Firefly Of Summer by Robert Ford
The Con Season by Adam Cesare
The Terminal by Amber Fallon (This was pulpy fun!!)
Shine Your Light On Me by Lee Thompson (Yes, Shock Totem put this out but I had not read it at all until after it was published.)
A House At The Bottom Of A Lake by Josh Malerman
The Unfinished World by Amber Sparks
Greener Pastures by Michael Wehunt (Yes, ST put this out, but even after reading these stories like 80 times each I still love it!)
A Natural History Of Hell by Jeffrey Ford
Creeping Waves by Matthew Bartlett (I could not decide what this was...novel or collection.)
Lost Signals edited by Max Booth III and Lori Michelle
Breaking Point by Kit Power
Companions In Ruin by Mark Allan Gunnells
There was no shortage of great reading material this year. And I'm sure that many titles slipped my mind as I jotted this down. Here's hoping that the new year is just as ripe with great books.
